The few stories I've read by Crane are all immensely improved in my head by Berryman's extensive close readings. It's also fascinating to learn the way Crane packed so much life into only 28 years - though my copy of this book is strangely missing pages 11 through 16, in which time his father dies, and Crane apparently has at least one important childhood event.
The last chapter bogs down in Freudian analysis - worse, Freudian analysis as understood in I'm not saying none of that part makes sense, but Berryman sure has to strain to make so much of Crane's work involve killing off his parents and desiring his mother.
