Much of this work at Imperial College is conducted in collaboration with Blackett Laboratory Laser Consortium, where he is associated director. He is an experimental physicist with research interests including high power and ultra-short pulse laser development, experimental laser matter interaction physics particularly with atomic cluster and nanoscale targetslaboratory based experimental astrophysics and attoscience.

Infollowing the removal of Sir Hugh Fraser from the chairmanship, he became chairman of the company. There followed a four year struggle with Tiny Rowland of Lonrho for control of the House of Fraser Group, whose prize asset was Harrods. Smith resisted all of Rowland's attempts to unseat him and gain control of House of Fraser. Inhe recommended to shareholders that they should accept a takeover offer from the Fayed brothers.

After the takeover, in JuneSmith resigned as chairman. Inhe took over as chairman of British Aerospace, leading, inthe ill-fated takeover of the Rover Group.
